THE 4TH INTERNATIONAL CLASSICAL MUSIC SINGING COMPETITION (the SGSM singing competition)

 The competition will be held for the following two categories (genres): OPERA and/or LIEDER.

 The competition will be carried out in two stages:

-        the preliminary round of the singing competition in the OPERA category on Monday, 25 May 2020,

-        the preliminary round of the singing competition in the LIEDER category on Tuesday, 26 May 2020,

-        the final competition in both categories on Wednesday, 27 May 2020.

 

In the event of a high number of applications, the schedule of the competition may change.

The competition will be held at the Janez Trdina Arts Centre, Novi trg 5, Novo mesto. The final concert with the award ceremony will be held on Wednesday, 27 May 2020 at the Janez Trdina Arts Centre.

 

 RULES OF THE COMPETITION

The competition may be entered into by Slovenians and foreign nationals.

The competition may be entered into by men and women who were born in 1988 or later.

By submitting an entry (sending an application) for the competition, the competitor agrees to the Rules of the Competition and undertakes to perform at the final concert. In such case, he or she will waive any sort of payment or financial compensation. The same shall also apply to the recording of the final concert.

 

 APPLYING FOR THE COMPETITION

Contestants may register for the competition by submitting a filled out application form available at

https://www.kcjt.si/festivali/festival-sgsm/2019

The following information must be included in the application form:

-        full name of the competitor/entrant

-        address: street, town, country

-        year of birth, country of birth

-        the chosen category/genre (opera, lieder); the competitor may apply for an individual genre or both genres – in either case, they only pay one registration fee.

The following documentation/attachments must be submitted along with the application form:

-        the jpg/pdf file of the application form with a handwritten signature by an adult competitor, or a signature of the competitor's legal representative if the competitor has not yet reached the age of majority,

-        jpg/pdf file of the birth certificate or a valid identity document,

-        declaration of the authenticity of the documents signed by the competitor or the competitor's legal representative if the competitor has not yet reached the age of majority,

-        a copy or a jpg/pdf file of a receipt for the paid registration fee and

-        a copy or a jpg/pdf file of the sheet music for the piano accompaniment.

The application form must be submitted, along with the attachments, to the following email address: sgsm@novomesto.si. The electronic application must be titled “the SGSM 2020 Application”.

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The application entries should arrive no later than 30 April 2020. The applications arriving after this date will not be considered.

The competition programme may not be altered after registration.

 

REGISTRATION FEE

-        EUR 80.00 for competitors who provide their own accompanist or

-        EUR 120.00 for competitors whose accompanists are provided by the organizer.

The registration fee must be paid by 30 April 2020.

THE COMPETITION PROCESS AND SCHEDULE

The competition schedule is prepared for each individual day by the organizing committee of the competition on the basis of the list of registered competitors.

 

THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS AND THE COMPETITION PROGRAMME

The terms and conditions specify the time limits, mandatory compositions and other requirements regarding the performance of the programme that do not automatically arise from the rules of the competition or this call for applications.

General provisions:

-        The contestants in all categories must perform the entire programme from memory in the original language, in the original key and in accordance with standard performing practice.

-        At the request of the committee or the organizer, the contestants must submit the sheet music of the performed compositions in the original edition.

-        Contestants typically provide their own accompanists.  Contestants who want their accompanist to be provided by the organizer must specify that in the application form.

-        The performances may not exceed the prescribed duration. The panel may interrupt the entrant if he or she exceeds the permitted duration of the entire performance.

-        The order of performers will be determined based on a random selection made by a computer application.

-        The song order of individual performances may be chosen by the contestants themselves.

-        The winners from all categories will perform at the final concert on Wednesday 27 May 2020.

 

 THE PROGRAMME

OPERA

The preliminary round – the duration of the performance may not exceed 10 minutes or be less than 6 minutes:

a) At least two arias

b) An aria chosen by the competitor

c) An aria by W. A. Mozart

d) The arias must be sung in at least two different languages.

e) All the arias must be sung in the original language and in the original key.

 

The final event – the duration of the performance may not exceed 15 minutes or be less than 10 minutes:

a) One of the arias from the preliminary round may be repeated.

b) The arias must be sung in at least two different languages.

c) All the arias must be sung in the original language and in the original key.

 

LIEDER

The preliminary round – the duration of the performance may not exceed 10 minutes or be less than 6 minutes:

a) A lied by Franz Schubert

b) A lied by a French composer

c) All the lieder must be sung in the original language and in the original key.

 

The final event – the duration of the performance may not exceed 15 minutes or be less than 10 minutes:

a) One of the lieder from the preliminary round may be repeated.

b) A lied by a Slovene composer.

c) One composition written after 1950.

d) All the lieder must be sung in the original language and in the original key.

AWARD CERTIFICATES, PLAQUES AND REWARDS

1st prize in either category:

The Municipality of Novo mesto Golden Plaque, EUR 1,000 cash prize and an appearance at the concert of the Festival SGSM 2020.

 

2nd prize in either category:

The Municipality of Novo mesto Silver Plaque, EUR 500 cash prize and an appearance at the concert of the Festival SGSM 2020.

 

3rd prize in either category:

Appearance at the Festival SGSM 2020 concert.

 

An award certificate from the Municipality of Novo mesto to all the final contestants

 

An award certificate from the Municipality of Novo mesto to all the participants in the competition

 

A special prize awarded to a promising singer below the age of 24:

The prize – appearance at the Festival SGSM 2020 concert in Novo mesto – is awarded for each competition category.
